Weenies Royale and Other Camp Recipes: Tadaima! Community Virtual Memorial Pilgrimage x Community Kitchen

July 5, 2020

Online community discussion of Japanese American foodways and traditions originating from the WWII American concentration camps. Part of the Sunday Supper series of the Tadaima! Community Virtual Pilgrimage held summer of 2020 organized by Japanese American Memorial Pilgrimages JAMP. Recorded by the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California on July 5, 2020.

From JAMP:

Some of our most poignant memories can invoke other senses, including taste and smell. Join us for a special Tadaima! Virtual Community Pilgrimage edition of the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California’s Community Kitchen Virtual Potluck program as we learn how to make weenies royale, a recipe served in the camp mess halls, and engage in a community discussion to share memories and stories of foods and meals in the camps. Participants will be provided with the recipe and instructional YouTube videos in advance, and will be asked to prepare the dish (or other dishes from the camps of your choosing) in advance so that they can be shared virtually with everyone over webcam during the live webinar discussion. The main discussion will be hosted by Haruka Roudebush, Senior Programs Manager at the Center along with members of the Community Kitchen volunteer committee. Haruka also serves as the national Vice President of 1,000 Club, Membership and Services of the JACL. Sunday Supper is a Tadaima! segment that features Japanese dishes with stories and traditions that are attached to them.
