Even though we can’t get together in person while we shelter in place for our usual Community Kitchen nights, our Community Kitchen committee is holding our monthly virtual potlucks so we can share the joy of cooking Japanese and Japanese American family recipes with everyone! The theme for September’s virtual potluck is Okinawan dishes! Okinawa is the largest of the Ryukyu islands to the south of the main islands of Japan, and has its own distinct history and culture from Japan’s main islands. The cuisine of Okinawa also reflects the various outside influences on the island from Japan and China, and even the modern day US military presence has had a part in influencing Okinawan cooking. This year also marks the 120th anniversary of immigration to the US from Okinawa, with many Japanese American family having Okinawan roots, so let’s enjoy exploring some of the great dishes from the island!

We encourage you to try making an Okinawan dish in advance to share on your webcam during the virtual potluck! Here are some suggested recipes and cooking videos to help get you started:
