Over the last the few years, the JCCCNC has extended its music and dance offerings. We now offer many classes and activities in a variety of music and dance styles, in addition to our traditionally popular odori and taiko classes.

percussionCuban Conga Drum & Afro-Cuban Percussion

Level 1: Sundays 10:00-11:00am

Bay Area percussionist Gary Cerald demonstrates and teaches the proper approach and techniques for playing Conga Drums and Afro-Cuban percussion instruments.

Hawaiian Expressive Singing

Wednesday 7:30-9:30pm

Instructor: Ka'ala Carmack

The emphasis of the class will be primarily on Hawaiian song traditions, but other vocal styles and repertoire are welcome.  The class will cover breath support, body posture, tonal placement, issues of tonal resonance and range extension, diction, phrasing and stylistic elements including leo kiekie (Hawaiian falsetto).

Hula

Thursdays 6:00-7:30pm (Adults)

Saturdays 9:30am-12:30pm (Keiki and Adults)

Instructor: Ron Puamaikalani Patroncinio

Learn both Auwana (modern) and Kahiko (ancient) hula.  You will experience anaerobic (lower impact) exercise while learning to dance hula as well as make friends.

Kirakiraboshi Choir (Japanese Children's Songs)

Taiko is an ideal way to combine the excitement and exercise of athletics with the discipline of learning a traditional art form.

The Beginning classes focus on drumming fundamentals including: Traditional Japanese Sensei/ Gakusei (Teacher/Student) etiquette, proper playing stances and forms and discipline and harmony of mind, body and spirit.
