Screening/Discussion: The Cats of Mirikitani

Thursday, October 18, 2007 ~ 6:00 p.m.

"Make art not war" is Jimmy Mirikitani's motto. The 85-year-old Japanese-American artist was born in Sacramento, imprisoned in the Tule Lake Internment Camp and raised in Hiroshima, but in 2001 he was living on the streets of New York with the twin towers of the World Trade Center still ominously framing the horizon behind him. What begins as a simple verite portrait of one homeless man becomes a rare documentary of daily life in New York in the months leading up to and following September 11, 2001. An intimate exploration of the lingering wounds of war and the healing powers of friendship and art, The Cats of Mirikitani won the Audience Award at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival.

A discussion with the film maker Linda Hottendorf moderated by Chi-hui Yang will follow.

Location: 500 Washington Street, 5th Floor, San Francisco, CA

Schedule: 5:30 p.m. Registration, 6:00 Program, 7:30 Sushi/Wine Reception

"After The Quake" Theater Performance

Dates: Friday, October 19- Friday, October 26, 2007

Berkeley Repertory Theatre, in association with La Jolla Playhouse, presents Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s production of After The Quake based on “Honey Pie” and “Superfrog Saves Tokyo” from the novel After The Quake by Haruki Murakami. Adapted for the stage and directed by Frank Galati.

Director Frank Galati won two Tony Awards for The Grapes of Wrath. Writer Haruki Murakami, author of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Kafka on the Shore, earned Japan’s equivalent of the Pulitzer. Now the two talents collide in after the quake, a simple, gentle tale of life in the wake of earth-shaking disaster. A timid man woos an old flame, enchanting her anxious daughter with whimsical stories of a six-foot frog’s fight to save Tokyo. In this poignant new play, we see that a storyteller can’t dispel the world’s woes, but he can teach a child—and himself—how to face fear.

This season, Berkeley Rep celebrates its birthday with inviting new prices: regular ticket prices start at just $27 but JCCCNC members save 20% when you purchase online—enter promo code 2859 when prompted at http://www.berkeleyrep.org/jcccnc/

Location: Berkeley Repertory Theatre
Fees: $27 at the door or 20% discount when you purchase tickets online using code above.

American Pastime film screening

Saturday, November 17, 2007, 2:00 p.m.

American Pastime takes viewers into the lives of the Japanese American community at a time when their very foundations were shaken to the core. Adding elements of humor, romance and action, the film is based on the true events of World War II’s U.S. home front, where nearly a quarter of a million Japanese Americans, though citizens of this country, were uprooted from their homes and placed in remote internment camps because of a perceived security threat. The film’s story centers around one family in Utah’s Topaz camp where the interned community ironically uses baseball, for decades a part of the Japanese American fabric, as a way to rise above their daily hardships and adversity.
