Japanese American Sports Hall of Fame

In November of 2002, the Japanese Cultural & Community Center of Northern California created the Japanese American Sports Hall of Fame to honor the achievements of distinguished Japanese American athletes.

Inaugural Event

The JCCCNC, along with over 600 attendees and sports icons, paid tribute to Japanese American athletes and community heroes by inducting them into the Japanese American Sports Hall of Fame (JASHF) at Pacific Bell Park.

JASHF Award PresentationIn addition to the presentation of awards at the Japanese American Sports Hall of Fame, a Silent and Live Auction and Raffle (benefiting the Nikkei Youth Sports Scholarship Fund) were held.

The recipients of the raffle prizes were Matt Dingess of Walnut Creek (two round trip tickets to Hawaii courtesy of Hawaiian Airlines and two night accomodations/two rounds of golf courtesy of Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki), Raymond and Stacia Hom of San Francisco (Baseball bat autographed by Barry Bonds and Ichiro Suzuki), and Timothy Purcell of San Francisco (Giants Jersey autographed by Tsuyoshi Shinjo).

Recipients of the Sports Memorabilia Live Auction items were Kristi Yamaguchi (San Francisco Giants - Four field level seats and on the field batting practice privileges), Terry Akiyama, (San Francisco 49ers – Jeff Garcia autographed jersey, Steve Mariucci autographed football, two passes for VIP privileges at 49ers HQ), Teresa Ono (Warrior for a Day), and Duane Kuriso (Oakland Athletics – Luxury box suite for 18).

Proceeds from the event will assist in providing youth programs for the community.

On November 2, 2002, at Pac Bell Park, the JCCCNC honored five of the greatest Japanese American athletes of all time for their achievements by inducting them into the newly founded Japanese American Sports Hall of Fame (JASHF). The inaugural inductees to the JASHF were:

By honoring these outstanding athletes and organizations, the JASHF intends to recognize not only their excellence in their chosen athletic field, but also the important role they played in bringing pride to the Japanese American community and to our nation.

Community Sports Hero Award

The JASHF’s also introduced its Community Sports Hero Award honoring two organizations that have dedicated decades of service to tens of thousands of Japanese American youth by creating sports leagues and teams that positively impacted lives both on and off the field of play. The first recipients of this award were:
