Kaiseki Cooking Workshop
Saturday, February 23, 2008
1:00-3:30 p.m.
Instructors: Kimika Soka Takechi and Larry Sokyo Tiscornia
Kaiseki ryori, seasonal Japanese cuisine served during the traditional Chanoyu (tea ceremony) gathering, has its roots in the simple seasonal vegetarian cuisine served in the Zen temple.
Kaiseki cuisine uses fresh seasonal ingredients, simple seasonings and cooking techniques to create dishes that are beautiful to look at, tasty, and in harmony with the season. Strictly vegetarian in earlier times, kaiseki cooking has changed with modern tastes and customs and now often includes seafood, poultry and meat in its many dishes.
This early spring class will feature a mukozuke, first course, wanmori, or nimonowan, main course and an azukebachi, side dish. The mukozuke will be hirame no kimiae, thinly sliced raw flounder (or lightly poached scallops) tossed with hard boiled egg yolk. The wanmori will be ebishinjo, steamed fish dumplings with prawns. Gomaae, seasonal greens in a sweet-tart sesame dressing, will be the azukebachi. The class will be mostly demonstration, with some hands-on arranging, and participants will be able to sample the dishes that are prepared.
Location: JCCCNC
Fees: $30/members and $35/non-members (Workshop limited to the first 20 paid participants)
More info: Please call (415) 567-5505 for more information or to register.

Only The Brave
Wednesday, February 27, 2008
2:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
"ONLY THE BRAVE" is the first motion picture about the 100th/442nd as seen through the eyes of the men who lived it.
1400 Hawaiian Nisei became the 100th Infantry Battalion after successfully petitioning the U.S. government to allow them to serve.
In June 1944, they were joined by the 442nd - comprised of Nisei volunteers from the internment camps and Hawaii - and proceeded to liberate five towns in Northern Italy.
They were shipped to Southern France and freed three towns, before being recruited for what would become one of the top ten most important battles of World War II - the dangerous rescue of the Texas "Lost Battalion."
This film is based on actual experiences of Lane Nishikawa's three uncles, as well as other veterans who shared their memories with him over the years.
Location: Sundance Kabuki Cinemas
1881 Post Street, San Francisco
Fees: $8 JCCCNC members
Admission free for U.S. Armed Forces veterans
More info: Please call 415-567-5505 to reserve your ticket today!
