"Stanley Hayami, Nisei Son" Book Reading and Q & A with Author Joanne Oppenheim

Wednesday, April 29, 2009, 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Stanley Hayami was sixteen years old when he was sent to Heart Mountain, an internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II. He kept a diary of his life in the camps, augmented with sketches and drawings. In 1944, like many young Nisei men, he was drafted into the 442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team. He never lost faith in America and remained defiantly patriotic to his death at the age of nineteen. This book is based on his diary, which is now in the permanent collection of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, California.

Please join us in the book reading followed by questions and answers by author Joanne Oppenheim who has written over fifty books. She is also the president and co-founder of Oppenheim Toy Portfolio, Inc., a family company that publishes books on the most successful toys for children. Oppenheim, a leading expert on

child-development and education, is a regular contributor on NBC’s Today Show.

Wagashi Workshop

Instructors: Kimika Soko Takechi and Larry Sokyo Tiscornia

In this workshop participants will learn how to prepare two sweets, mitarashidango and minazuki.

Mitarashidango are small round dumplings made from rice flour. They are placed on a skewer, steamed and then grilled and served with a sweet sauce.  Mitarashidango are served at festivals in Japan and traditionally served during jizobon, the summer Buddhist Children's Festival.

Minazuki, the poetic name for June meaning "Rainless Month," is a sweet made from rice flour that is steamed. It is cut into triangles representing ice and topped with sweet azuki beans. Tradition is that eating this sweet on June 30 will protect one from evil and bring relief from the intense summer heat.

Kaiseki Workshop

Saturday, June 27, 2009, 1:00 -3:30 p.m.

Instructors: Kimika Soko Takechi and Larry Sokyo Tiscornia

Kaiseki ryori, seasonal Japanese cuisine served during the traditional Chanoyu (tea ceremony) gathering, has its roots in the simple seasonal vegetarian cuisine served in the Zen temple.
Kaiseki cuisine uses fresh seasonal ingredients, simple seasonings and cooking techniques to create dishes that are beautiful to look at, tasty, and in harmony with the season. Strictly vegetarian in earlier times, kaiseki cooking has changed with modern tastes and customs and now often includes seafood, poultry and meat in its many dishes.

This summer workshop will feature 3 courses and students will learn how to cook Japanese rice in a traditional stove top rice cooker. Dashi soup stock will also be made using konbu (kelp) and katsuobushi (shaved dried bonito). The mukozuke (first course) will be maguro tataki (pan seared fresh tuna). The nimonowan (main course) will be aosudofu (green pea "tofu" made with green peas and kuzu [kudzu starch]). There will also be a side dish of kinomeai (seasonal greens in a fragrant sweet miso dressing with fresh kinome [prickly ash leaves]). The class will be mostly demonstration, with some hands-on arranging, and participants will be able to sample the dishes that are prepared.

Location: JCCCNC
Fees: $30 JCCCNC members / $35 non-members

Workshop is limited to the first 20 paid and registered participants.
