Kaiseki Workshop

Saturday, April 24, 2010, 12:00-2:30 p.m.

Kaiseki ryori, seasonal Japanese cuisine served during the traditional Chanoyu (tea ceremony) gathering, has its roots in the simple seasonal vegetarian cuisine served in the Zen temple.

Kaiseki cuisine uses fresh seasonal ingredients, simple seasonings and cooking techniques to create dishes that are beautiful to look at, tasty, and in harmony with the season. Strictly vegetarian in earlier times, kaiseki cooking has changed with modern tastes and customs and now often includes seafood, poultry and meat in its many dishes.

This spring workshop will feature 3 dishes, dashi soup stock and rice.  The mukozuke (first course) will be vegetarian and is composed of grilled shiitake mushrooms, shungiku ("chrysanthemum leaves") and bean sprouts with a sesame tofu dressing.  The wanmori (main course) will be hamagurishinjo, a steamed clam dumpling.  The azukebachi  (side dish) will be konnyaku ("devils tongue" yam) with karashi miso (mustard accented miso).  Sekihan (red bean rice) will also be prepared.  The class will be mostly demonstration, with some hands-on arranging, and participants will be able to sample the dishes that are prepared.

Location: JCCCNC
Fees: $30 JCCCNC members / $35 non-members

A Healthy Community Discussion with Dr. Kimberly Kono

Caring for the Caregiver: Information and Support for Caregivers

Thursday, May 20, 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.  -  CANCELLED

It is a well-known fact that children do not come with an instruction booklet.  Neither do adults.  Nothing can really prepare you for the role of caring for a loved one with a brain injury, helping a friend or family member cope with a stroke or parenting a parent.  Cognitive impairment not only affects the individuals experiencing it, but those who care for them as well.  Caregiving is a gift of love and whether or not a friend or family member is to express or show their gratitude, your life has changed.

This talk will address potential caregiving concerns (e.g. how to care for someone with a memory impairment, safety issues, etc.), but also provide you with information and encourage you, as a caregiver, to care for yourself.

Location: JCCCNC
Fees: Free and open to the public
