Temari Classes

Temariballs2016 Dates: June 5, July 10, August 21, September 25, October 23, Future Dates TBD
Instructor: Cindy Lewis-Freid

Learn the 1,000 year old traditional craft of temari, hand stitched balls featuring intricate geometric designs in dazzling colors! Traditionally crafted as children’s toys, temari throughout history have also served as ornamental gifts for Japanese nobility. Our class dates feature 3 sessions, one for intermediate crafters, a session specifically for creating the mari ball base, and also an introduction session for absolute beginners.

Temari Techniques Class (9:15am – 12:15am)

This class is appropriate for students who have taken the Introduction to Temari class or for participants who have some previous temari experience.  Each class session focuses on a particular stitch or technique and will be different each class.  Participants should not expect to complete their temari by the end of the three hour class but are welcome to stay longer to continue to work and ask any questions.  Participants will be able to apply the skills learned at the class to finish their temari at home.

Cost: $65 Members / $75 Non-Members (includes all materials)

Mari Making Class (12:45pm – 2:45pm)

marithreadwrap2This class is appropriate for all levels, including those creating temari for the first time.  Students will learn how to make their own temari base from scratch.  The workshop will begin with a demonstration of the steps to make your mari (thread ball).  Students will then have the opportunity to make up to three mari, using different colors of thread.  After most students have completed their first mari, the workshop will include a demonstration of how to use paper measuring strips to add marking lines on their finished mari base.

Cost: $42 Members / $52 Non-Members (includes all materials)

Introduction to Temari Class (3:00pm – 6:00pm)

Red TemariThis class will give an introduction to the traditional Japanese craft of temari, including history, traditional materials, anatomy of a temrai ball, stitching vocabulary, etc.  The project for this workshop will be a “Cranes & Bamboo” design on a dark red wrapped mari (thread ball).  Participants should be able to complete stitching the design during the workshop.
