Come and join San Francisco Awakko-ren’s Awa Odori dance group as they host an introductory Awa Odori dance lesson here at the Center. San Francisco Awakko Ren is an Awa Odori dance group founded in 2011. Ada Odori is a traditional Japanese dance that is simple, joyful, and easy to get hooked on! Dancers wear traditional kimono as they dance to live music that includes taiko drum, kane (bell), flute, and shamisen (3 string Japanese instrument). Awa Odori is over 400 years old, originating in Tokushima, Japan. Each summer, over a million people gather in Tokushima to dance in what is the largest dance festival in Japan. Awakko Ren is an open group that teaches newcomers interested in performing or just looking for a new experience. Come give Awa Odori a try! Workshop is for ages 8+; children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.
