Samurai History Tour Led by Romulus Hillsborough
June 21, 2004
SAN FRANCISCO (June 21, 2004) – The Japanese Cultural and
Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC) announces the Samurai
History Tour , September 4 through 13, 2004. The ten-day
tour originates in San Francisco and travelers experience a personally
guided tour of historical areas in Tokyo and Kyoto.
The tour will be accompanied and narrated by Mr. Romulus Hillsborough,
renowned author and historian, who will present the background and
history of each site prior to the visit. Participants in
Samurai History Tour will gain firsthand knowledge of
the history of the Meiji Restoration – interfacing with the “samurai
spirit,” which has profoundly influenced the sense of values in
modern Japan.
The Meiji Restoration was one the most important events
in Asian history, and one of the greatest revolutions in the history
of the world. It centered around the overthrow in 1868 of the Tokugawa
Shogunate (the samurai regime which ruled Japan for two and a half
centuries), and the subsequent restoration of political power to
the emperor.
Mid-19th-century Japan was a time of political upheaval
and intrigue, bloody fighting amongst the samurai, and the end of
three centuries of feudalism under Tokugawa rule. This most enthralling
age in the annals of Japan brought forth some of the most fascinating
men in that nation's history. These samurai modernized Japan, and
laid the foundation for the militarism of WWII and the economic
powerhouse of today. Close scrutiny of these two-sworded men provides
insight into the political, cultural and psychological roots of
modern Japan. Just as the Meiji Restoration is considered "the
dawn of modern Japan," kno wledge of this history is essential
for understanding how and why Japan has evolved into the nation
that it is today.
The tour price is $2950 ($460 for single supplement, $2,350 for
land only) and includes air, hotel, land transportation, breakfast
daily, 3 lunches and 1 dinner. A deposit of $500 by July
15, 2004 is required for reservation. (After July 15, 2004,
deposit is non-refundable).
