Kodomo no Hi Festival in San Francisco Japantown

April 27, 2004

SAN FRANCISCO (April 27, 2004) - The 12th annual Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day) Festival will be held on Sunday, May 16, 2004 from 11 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Japantown Peace Plaza in San Francisco. The Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California presents this annual festival in recognition of the national holiday of Japan, which was established after World War II in efforts to lift spirits and celebrate children.

The Kodomo no Hi festival includes children's entertainment, hands-on activities, games, food and an art contest sponsored by Sakura of America. The festival gives children the opportunity to learn about Children’s Day and the Japanese culture through hands-on arts and crafts that they are able to take with them. Possible crafts this year include: Shibori (Textile Art), fish painting, mask making, doll making, shrinky dinks and origami.

The Children’s Day entertainment includes presentations by Michiya Hanayagi Dance Group, SambAsia (Brazilian percussion and samba w/ Japanese taiko and folk dance), Kirakiraboshi Children’s Choir, JBBP West Choir, Ka’ala Carmack’s Ukulele Players, Nihonmachi Little Friends, ABC Preschool, International Karate League, S.F. Kendo Association, Jr. Jam Session and Gen Taiko.

The event is sponsored by the JCCCNC, Japantown Merchants Association, Miyako Mall Tenants Association and Sakura of America and supported by local community volunteers from: ABC Preschool, ArtSpan, Asian Art Museum, Consulate General of Japan, Gen Taiko, Japanese Community Youth Council, JBBP West, JCCCNC, Japantown Merchants Association, Konko Church, Miyako Mall Tenants, National Japanese American Historical Society, Nihonmachi Little Friends and Pine United Methodist Church.
