March 18, 2004

SAN FRANCISCO (March 18, 2004) - The Japanese Cultural & Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC) presents a Shojin-Ryori (Japanese Vegetarian) cooking workshop with Miyoko Schinner on Sunday, March 28, 2004. Two sessions of this course will be held at JCCCNC, the first to be held at 10 a.m. to noon and a repeated second session scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m.

During spring, Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) Picnics and Cherry Blossom festivals are held all over Japan. The custom of Hanami has existed since the 7th century and the tradition continues as groups of friends, family and co-workers enjoy the Hanami by having picnics under the blooming sakura trees.

Schinner will instruct on how to prepare a delicious Hanami Picnic menu that includes – fanciful vegetarian sushi featuring: braised ginger eggplant nigiri-zushi, mixed melody of mushroom nigiri-zushi, roasted red bell pepper, avocado and green onion sushi and other innovative vegetarian sushi selections. She will also be teaching us how to make spicy “beef” Teriyaki (seitan, or wheat gluten) and soba and vegetable salad. For dessert, peach jewel Kanten will be provided.

Class fees are $25 for JCCCNC members/$30 for non-members. All classes held at JCCCNC, 1840 Sutter Street, located in San Francisco’s Japantown. Space is limited in both classes, reservations are required. Contact JCCCNC at (415) 567-5505 for information and to reserve your space.
