July 2, 2003

SAN FRANCISCO (July 2, 2003) - Japanese Cultural & Community Center of Northern California proudly presents the return of the Children’s Summer Art and Dance Camp held in two sessions, August 11-15 and August 18-22, each from Monday thru Friday, at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC) located in San Francisco’s Japantown.

The camp consists of stART with ART, a morning art camp, from 9:30 to 12:30 p.m., and Gotta Dance & Tumble Too, an afternoon dance camp from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. offering boys and girls ages 5-10 an opportunity to explore different artistic expressions through art and dance.

The stART with Art Camp cultivates your child’s creativity through different mediums of art including printmaking, Japanese shibori, papermaking, painting, and ceramics taught by various accomplished artists from the community. Each day begins with a new project instructed by a specialized artist who will work closely with the children to foster an appreciation for art and provide a productive learning environment.

At the conclusion of the program, their artwork will proudly be displayed in JCCCNC’s Exhibit Hall for family, friends, and the community to view. Julie Hata will serve as coordinator for stART with Art Camp and is excited about the opportunity to combine her love for children, art, and activism.

Instructors participating in the program include: Chris Durazo, painter/ceramic sculptor, Kaori Kao, a painter/illustrator, Yukiko Ichimura Sorrell, shibori artist, Lily Wong, and others. Children will engage in ceramics, paper art painting, storytelling, textile dying, and book making.

After a morning of fun-filled arts and crafts, it is now time for your child to acquire the art of dance. Children can further enjoy and learn to express their creativity while increasing their strength and flexibility through dance in the Gotta Dance and Tumble Too camp.

JCCCNC is honored to welcome the return of Corinne Nagata, a professional dancer originally from the Bay Area, who currently teaches and studies dance in New York. Through their exposure to various methods of movement, each child will be able to express their new dance and tumbling skills in a choreographed performance held at the end of each dance session.

The first session takes place August 11-15, with the stART with Art Camp beginning at 9:30 to 12:30 pm, and The Gotta Dance and Tumble Too Camp at 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. The second session runs from August 18-22 at the same times. The Art or Dance Camp can either be taken separately or in conjunction with one another.

As an added convenience for parents, JCCCNC will provide day-care from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. each day. For full day participants, there will also be a one-hour supervised lunchtime with activities provided by the camp staff. The registration fee for either the Art or Dance Camp is: $100 JCCCNC members/$115 general; for both Art and Dance Camp, the fee is: $180 member/$210 general.
